Remember that nice route description I did? Yeah well, the route has changed. Here is a handy little mappie-poo for everyone.

zerone45 has nicely offered everyone who can squish in her car to meet up at her place for parking savings. I know we have a few people who are coming from out of town who might need a place to crash - if you let me know here - we can probably work something out.

Plans, we can finalize them!

Krewe du Vieux Parade

Location:          Marigny/French Quarter New Orleans
Date:                Saturday, February 7, 2009
Time:                6:30PM - ish
Theme:             Secret Until They Tell Us

OK - a bunch of people expressed interest in this a while back so I wanted to give everyone a heads up to allow planning time.  The Krewe du Vieux parade is on Saturday February 7th (this is the first Saturday in February).

Please note: THIS IS AN ADULT PARADE!  Really.  I am not joking.  One of the sub-krewes is the Mystic Krewe of Sperms.  Do you see where this is going? OK then.

You can read up on the parade here: www.kreweduvieux.org

For the OCD people
The Route

The parade starts at the corner of Chartres and Elysian Fields to Franklin Ave, to Royal St going upriver (into the Quarter) to Conti, down Decatur, up Frenchman back to Royal, then down Elysian Fields to end up where it all started.

 Good Things to Note

  1. High perv points
  2. Small local crowd
  3. Biting social commentary
  4. Tourists rarely know about it
  5. Low volume of throws (good thing for me)
  6. Can wear robes and no one will care

 Things to Remember

  1. Can be REALLY cold that early in Feb!!!  Ask me about last year. BRR!
  2. The Quarter/Marigny parking issues
  3. Low volume of throws (might be bad for some)
  4. Odds of stranger groping higher than usual. (Can be good, can be REALLY not good too)
  5. Walking/mule drawn parade – not going to move fast.
  6. Mules.  Enough said.

Questions? Comments?  Silly banter to bat about?  Tell me to shut up?

The bookparty is in Da' Paper like we are all grownups or something!   Wait... I think I am a grownup.

Nevermind.

Anyway - this is a final reminder that the Beedle the Bard Book Party is THIS SATURDAY (12/6/08) from 11am - 12:30pm.  Kids and grownups welcome. The Purebloods will be there.

Maple Street Children's Book Shop, 7529 Maple St., New Orleans.

See you there (I hope)!!!

(Please someone come - if I'm all alone I'm going to bust out crying and wither away into the void. Is that really what you want on your head?  I didn't think so. /guilt trip)

Big Two-Week Notice Post!

hp_la ’s Book Release Party for The Tales of Beedle the Bard is 12 days away!!!

Here is a lot of bullet points with lots of information in them:

  • That weekend we are competing with a big Borders store opening not far away. Ouch. Actually – I believe it is just a new store opening and has nothing to do with Beedle. But – this might cut into attendance by the public, so a BIG hp_la showing would be REALLY IMPORTANT!
  • We will be having wizard bingo (WINKY!), an HP crossword puzzle (that is pretty awesome even if I created it myself), and a word search for the start of the party – then our own The Purebloods will have a concert!
  • We have a few prizes already donated to the cause – but if you have some HP merch that you would like to donate out of the goodness of your heart – let me know!
  • Costumes will be VERY wonderful – but if you wish just to do muggle attire, go for it. The most important thing is to have you there.
  • Remember bring the kidlets! In costume if possible! Or just in clean clothes – I’m really ok with either one! :D

The address is again:

Maple Street Children's Bookshop
7529 Maple Street
New Orleans, LA 70118
(504) 861-2105 – if you care to pre-order the book
Date/Time: December 6th 11am to 12:30pm

I did a drive-by this weekend. The shop is a converted cottage – so very small and cute. BUT, this also means – no parking lot, narrow street, and street parking. So bring good walking shoes and be prepared to walk a few blocks to the store. And if you could manage to carpool; you would be in even better shape.

If anyone needs additional information/directions/etc, comment on this post or email me at eliand504 at gmail dot com. Feel free to pimp this out amongst any communities/sites/resources that you have – or contact me and tell me who to talk to and I’ll take care of it myself. :D

♦ Saturday, November 22nd, 2008:
Louisiana Renaissance Festival
A handful of us went last year and we all had a great time! There were some people who didn't get to go last year and expressed interest in doing this again! It opens at 10:00AM and lasts all day until 5:00PM. It's at 46468 River Road in Hammond LA, 70401 and admission is $14.00 for adults and $8.00 for children.

You can purchase and print tickets ahead of time online
here.

We will be meeting in Hammond that morning before the doors open! So let us know if you're interested in going and we'll make sure to keep an eye out for you, or vice versa!

It looks like we're going to try to meet up that morning, before they open the gates at around 9:30! I hope some of you can make it!

After some polling and whatnot, we've come up with our first couple of events for hp_la in November. Technically, it's one weekend with two different things going on. You can chose to go to both, or do just one that might be more convenient for you.

We're calling it Squee-Giving since it is the weekend before Thanksgiving. So here's the plans...

Twilight
I know that this doesn't really have anything to do with Harry Potter, but oh well! We will be seeing the movie at Rave Motion Pictures at 16040 Hatteras Ave. in Baton Rouge, LA 70816 right off of O'Neal Lane.

We will be going to an early showing on Sunday so that those coming in from out of town have plenty of time to get back home before dark. It will be at 1:00PM and you can purchase your tickets online here. Now don't forget, if you purchase your tickets ahead of time online, bring the credit/debit card that you used so you can pick up your ticket(s) at the theater.

If I missed anything or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Hope to see you guys in a few weeks!

Beedle the Bard Release Party Updates

All of the details for the part are listed below – and there are lots so make sure you soak up all of the goodness!

Release Party for "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" by J. K. Rowling
on
December 6th, 2008 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
at
The Maple Street Children's Bookshop

Location: 7529 Maple Street
New Orleans, LA 70118
(504) 861-2105
http://www.maplestreetbookshop.com/childrens.html
NOTE: Why Maple St and why in New Orleans? The big corporate stores always have corporate guidelines about what promotions they will allow, and all of the independent bookstores in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge who had any Potter Parties previously (say that 5 times fast) were contacted. Maple St was the store that responded!

The party is FREE and open to everyone! A press release regarding the party will be appearing in the Times-Picayune.

I'm hoping we can have LOTS of HP_LA people in attendance; ESPECIALLY if you can bring a young'n!!! We need lots of young’ns! The store will be providing refreshments and we (HP_LA) will be organizing all the events, which will be including:

• A Wrock Concert with Louisiana's own The Purebloods
(I claim them for the State. Moreover, I have a flag - so by the rules set forth by Eddie Izzard - they are Louisiana's).

• WINKY! (Wizard bingo - idea stolen shamelessly from Wrock the Boat!),

• A Potter crossword puzzle (I have no cool name for this yet),

• A word search (needs a name),

• & (possible additions if participation warrants) a dueling contest & costume contest.
NOTE: Anyone who has ideas for the dueling contest (and extra wands?) OR anything else that would be easy and cheap to do in a small space - PLEASE COMMENT. I will beg... it is not pretty - but I would do it.
It would be very VERY helpful if we knew who was going to try to attend and roughly how many people would be coming. If we are several, we should probably pre-order with the store so we don’t wipe them out of stock! The list price for the book is under $16 – however, I don’t have the price at Maple St yet.

I know funds are tight – oh BOY do I know – however, we have 6 weeks to start saving our pennies. Additionally, if anyone wants to plot going to lunch after the party and scare some muggles have some well-mannered frivolity; I would most definitely not be opposed to it.

Plotting/Planning-a-go-go
by The rattiest of all Rats (elseinane)

OK Everyone! Time to dust off the old journal!!!

As we are now heading into the OMG TOO MUCH TO DO holiday season of Halloween/Thanksgiving/varied December celebrations/New Years/King Cake Day/Mardi Gras

(I am tired just typing all that out!), I thought maybe doing a big idea sort of post might get the ideas flowing. Plus, I'm a planner. Ya'll know that. I wear the big R of Ravenclaw.

Anyway.

From random chats/conversations/ESP messages, we have a few ideas:

· Wrock the Boat Block Party (Sun, Oct 26th) - New Orleans

· Halloween (Fri, Oct 31st - duh) - no idea what people have planned, but if someone has an idea - time to speak up! :D

· Election Day online chat? (Tues, Nov 4th) So completely off-topic I can't stand it. But if it is needed - there you go. We could do one for each party so that everyone can vent freely... or just do your own thing. No worries. :D

· General November outings - (Nov 2008) LA Ren Faire, Twilight movie release, the "OMG Why Does HP_LA have so many November B-day's!" outing, and anything else people can think of...

· Beedle the Bard Release Party (REVISED featuring a Wrock concert by The Purebloods!!!!) - (Sat. Dec 6th) - New Orleans

· Yule Get-Together (Dec 2008) to be determined?

· New Year's Eve? (Wed. Dec 31st) No idea - just throwing it out there.

· HP_LA King Cake party. (after Jan 6th, 2009) Never had one - but no reason not to

· Superbowl Avoidance Party (Sun, Feb 1, 2009) This is of course, assuming that the Saints will not make it into the Superbowl. Since we have 40+ years to support this theory, I think we are safe. :D

· HP_LA goes to Krewe Du Vieux parade - (date not known yet - sometime in Feb 2009). NOTE: THIS IS SO COMPLETELY NOT APPROVED FOR KIDS!

Speak now – or forever hold your peace. :D
